All music in this video was played by me, with love.
___
This was the biggest I've ever dreamed for a video, and somehow all of the dreams came true.
I'm doing tests and comparisons because I love listening to music that sounds good, and I want to be prepared in all situations to make music that sounds good. Microphones were a blind spot for me. I didn't know how big the gap was between the tone of the mics that were used on my favorite records and the tone of the mics I use every day, and I was hoping to find a way to shorten that gap.
I'm very, very happy with where I ended up.
Hopefully you will be, too.

oh my godddddd this was an incredible video, thank you so much! and as a bonus, maybe I should listen to more country? Stupid Boy was a screamer!
Very good video. And it is always good to make more tools.
Guitar players never stop taking L's
Of course attaching the strings to a heavy metal table will make them sustain. Simple Newtonian physis. Literally every major guitar maker disagrees with you. If you think that Tom Anderson sounds the same as the kit guitar you are deaf. You can change pickups all you want.
8 months since his last video... Looks like The Industry finally caught wind of Jim's myth busting and took care of him. Thank you for your service.
Poor science education, dishonest marketting and greed are responsible for tons of nonsense. Same thing with many products!
It's funny when you find yourself 5 minutes into the video and you realize you've been lied to by pretty much the entire guitar and pickup industry.
Legend.
There you have it, boys and girls. Just play your guitar.
gonna be tough to play that last one on stage
TONE WOOD IS A LIE
I’m just a performer I know nothing about circuitry but I found this amp that can do one thing when you flip this switch and the other thing when you flip it back. Do you think it sounds different?
I just found your channel and have been watching your videos all afternoon. I'm in awe of you, man. You're inspiring. Thank you so much.
Serious question: How long did this video take to record?
A good factor for consideration is the time under stress of the string (via playing or just let it sit right there and if is there any different) may play a role in the degrade of the string sound. However, I haven't done any good experiment toward this to be sure
To save you 18 minutes, the summary of the video is, “Every influential guitar tone came from a guitarist playing a guitar through an amp that was recorded by a microphone.”
Was your kit a string through the body or not?
Almost everything sounded brighter than the 10-46's. The flat wounds difference was the most pronounced and they sounded good.
This is by far the best deep dive into amps I’ve ever seen
In essence the no body test had two bodies. The workbench on the left and the right LOL! This is an amazing video. Thank you for the time and effort put into this! It's very interesting and making me say?
And that' s the end of the debate. Awesome. BIG THANKS
Amazing video. Great work!!
Many of my preconceptions have been shattered. Thanks for such an informative video!
OMG! This is the best video EVER made! This totally proves its not the gear ...its the ear. Meaning if the song is good and you play it well thats all that really counts. This guy out to be in the recording/mixing hall of fame...if there is one. Bravo Jim! Thats dedication!😉👍
Well that was a nice piece of research.
Love the shout out to Episode IV ❤
will you release the data?
dude wow
dude this is like 20 projects in one
Kzoo!
Spectre sound mentions it one step further. It is the speaker.
It seems you can buy a kit or a piece of furniture adorned with strings & pickups however the changes in tone will be negligible.
So expensive guitar is a scam?
The partscaster actually sounds like a tele

This man is a hero
Over the speaker of my phone 95% of this video sounded almost identical tone wise.i would like some input from you about what you personally heard being there.
Hey man I think you need to show that clip of you switching the standby mode some more. I don't think you showed that clip enough.
This falls under my favorite mantra: “If it fits, it sits”
Bless you on your journey bro
I love your approach! However, it seems like instead of eliminating the body, you used your workbench as the body. To really get rid of the body, maybe you could try using a sonically dead material like a big mass of concrete or something similar?
This video sustained my full attention.
Also, you are a genius
This blew my mind, and rocked my world, and changed how I think about amps. In fact, rather than buy a new amp (like I've wanted to for a while), I'm gonna buy a new cab (because my same head through a new cab will sound way different than a new head through the same cab). Thanks for opening my eyes!
Hey Jim! Great video. Have you thought about getting an impulse response and using that in a cab emulator? Or, do you want to stick with real hardware?
I bet that air guitar stays in tune better than 99% of the Les Pauls in the world 😅
I do find pickup quality changes things. Thanks for doing this. It is amazing how this turned out.
Thanks for this incredibly huge, interesting and invaluable job! All of musicians should feel grateful about it.
Psuedo science nonsese. Glad poor people found a way to feel good about themselves.
lol someone's salty they spent ten times more on pretentious gear than they should have
@robroilen4441 Nope, someone has 20x more money than you, so they own nice stuff. It's OK to buy whatever you want if you can afford it.
@@brianaaland5263 The entire point of this video is that all of the high priced gear sounds practically identical to much less expensive gear. Spending multiples but getting the same results is purely foolish.
@robroilen4441 I've spent the majority of my life working in studios. It's not hard to make a $20k microphone sound like a sm57 if you want. These videos are made in such a way that is dishonest. Everything is made in a way where the goal is to make them sound similar. If it was to truly be impartial and show how they truly sound, it would be a different video. Only thing he's right about may be diminishing returns.
